Kavli Institute Director Eric Kandel Receives 2007 National Academies Best Book Award
October 1, 2007 Washington, D.C.
Eric Kandel, director of the Kavli Institute for Brain Science at Columbia University, has been announced recipient of the National Academies 2007 Communication Award for best book.
Kandel
received the award as author of ‘In Search of Memory: The Emergence of
a New Science of Mind.’ A personal memoir that is also an examination
of the science of memory, the book has been acclaimed by such
publications as Scientific American, which wrote: "[Kandel] conveys his immense grasp of the science beautifully, but it is his
personal recollections that make the book especially compelling... One comes away in awe of the scientific advances—and of a
life well and fully lived."
Kandel
will be honored during a ceremony on November 14 at the Arnold and
Mabel Beckman Center in Irvine, Calif. Joining him will be the
other recipients of this year’s National Academies Communications Awards, who were honored for best newspaper/magazine/Internet
writing and best TV/radio science program.
"We
received an impressive group of entries this year and are pleased to
recognize the abilities of these individuals in communicating science,
engineering, and medicine to the general public," said Donald Kennedy,
editor in chief, Science, and chair of the awards committee. "We hope
these awards inspire others to communicate about science in our world."
Part
of the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative, these awards
recognize excellence in reporting and communicating science,
engineering, and medicine to the general public. This is the fifth year
the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and
Institute of Medicine, with the support of the W.M. Keck Foundation,
have given the three $20,000 prizes.
