The organization is seeking a controller who will be responsible for directing the accounting and tax operations. The controller should be hands-on, with a deep understanding of the requirements for managing a fast-paced nonprofit with a large endowment, grants, contracts, and meetings. The controller will oversee the planning, managing, and reporting on the financial activity, including assessing current operations and control systems, managing staff, coordinating internal and external financial statements, working with auditors, and consultants, budgeting and overseeing regulatory reporting. This position reports to the Vice President of Finance and Administration/CFO (VPFA). The ideal candidate will have at least five years of demonstrated controller experience with a track record for providing accurate and efficient work.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Ensuring financial transactions and procedures meet organizational objectives and regulatory requirements
  • Development and maintenance of financials systems and its data.
  • Manage all accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards
  • Ensures audit, tax, and regulatory compliance
  • Responsible for the documentation of processes, workflows, and training material
  • Enforcing and improving internal controls and safeguards for assets and financial transactions.
  • Supervision of banking, credit, and tax functions including directly responsible for handling credit facilities
  • Responsible for property and risk insurance
  • Preparing regular and ad hoc internal and external financial statements including reports for management, board, and committees
  • Developing budget, forecasts and cash flow projections
  • Coordinating activities of external auditors and other outside parties
  • Assessing and evaluating current accounting operations, offering recommendations for improvement, and implementing new processes and systems
  • Eliminating backlogs, leverage new technology, and responding proactively to another department's needs
  • Developing and implementing processes for tracking and reporting meetings and events in the accounting system
  • Overseeing business transactions for the international facility including coordination of overseas regulatory requirements.
  • Commitment to training, mentoring and retaining a diverse team; the foresight and ability to delegate accordingly
  • Performs other related duties as necessary or assigned


  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required
    • Masters or CPA desirable
  • Working knowledge of accounting following Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), including significant experience in or knowledge of nonprofit accounting, grant accounting compliance, and reporting
  • Prior accounting experience with a successful track record in a senior financial management role
  • At least five years of experience as a controller or equivalent in a with a budget of at least $20 million
  • Grants and contracts experience preferred in a grant-making capacity
  • Software:
    • Sage Intacct: highly preferred
    • MS Office Suite
    • Excel: Intermediate to advanced
    • Experience with database management is required
    • GivingData: preferred
    • Salesforce CRM: desirable
  • Thorough knowledge of relevant accounting and tax pronouncements, legislative regulations and reporting procedures
  • Prior non-profit accounting experience preferred
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • Must be self-motivated
  • Ability to effectively manage staff and motivate in collaborative environment
  • Ability to work independently and as an effective team member
  • Ability to maintain absolute confidentiality and discretion
